Item Coversheet

AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY

ITEM SUMMARY:

Consider, on second reading, on Ordinance amending the Code of Griffin at Chapter 30, CEMETERIES, to revise provisions relating to interment of human remains within the city; disturbance of cemeteries, burial grounds, human remains, and burial objects; and rules and regulations for use and maintenance of City owned and maintained cemeteries, sale of burial rights, etc. City Attorney Drew Whalen and Dr. Brant Keller, Director of Public Works & Utilities will address.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS OR CONCERNS:

Current Code Chapter 30 has not been revised in several years and really relates only to the City's cemeteries. In its current status, this Code Chapter is difficult to follow. General regulations or restrictions concerning interment of human remains and disturbance of human remains should remain in the Code, while specific rules and regulations affecting only the City Cemeteries should be established by resolution of the Board.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

Approval.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

No negative impact. Certain procedures are being changed, such as grave openings, that should improve financial operations in the city-owned cemeteries.
