AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY

ITEM SUMMARY:

Consider Resolution amending the City of Griffin's Water / Wastewater Utility Fund Fiscal Year Operating and Capital Budget by appropriating $50,000.00 (expense) to equipment rental and $50,000.00 (revenue) to insurance claim (pending insurance reimbursement), in order to cover expenses resulting from a catastrophic pump motor failure.  Chief Financial Officer Markus Schwab and Director of Public Works and Utilities Brant Keller, PhD, will address.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS OR CONCERNS:

On January 8, 2015 the Still Branch Water Treatment Plant (WTP) experienced a catastrophic motor failure on its High Service Pump #2.  The failure was a result of a breakdown within the insulation around the motor windings.  At the time of motor #2’s failure, the drive on High Service Pump #1 was in route to MagnaDrive, located in Washington State, because of a suspected malfunction inside the drive.  With both High Service Pumps down, the Still Branch WTP needed to install temporary pumps in order to have the ability to provide water to the distribution network in the case of an emergency.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The resolution and amendment reallocates $50,000.00 to equipment rental and $50,000.00 to insurance claims (pending insurance reimbursement) for the payment of temporary pumps at Still Branch Reservoir.
